Here's my two cents. The basic three - sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups!! Once you feel that you want to move on, go free weights and do bench press, squats, and deadlifts. These three works, guaranteed.
When I used to lift, back in the shot/discus days, I like push-ups since it's a good warm up for the chest and arms. Since you use body weight, you just have to do more reps and sets to really work. Not that it's bad, it's just if you get bored just change the routine. Free weights allow you to balance the weight so you kind of get a workout doing that. Plus, you can add or lessen the weight. Don't forget squats, guaranteed to shock your body.
Try this - 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 pull-ups. Break it up in reps of 10 or 20 and rest for a couple or minutes in between sets. Do that for three months at every other day. It does not need to be 100 but shoot for that. Change your routine, make it fun. More importantly, if it hurts, stop. I injured my right rotator cuff from bench pressing - my routine was too aggressive and I did not rest that much. I used to get paranoid if I do not lift for 48 hours. Every other day is fine . . . good luck!
