Deadlift is my favorite all time free weight exercise, it works pretty much the whole body, esp. legs, butt, lower and upper back, shoulders, abs forearms (from holding on!), but I would caution a newbie from doing them, not knowing that person's fitness level, age (bad back!) or for example if s/he's being coached in technique. Wear a belt always! and start light weights
And what I think is the best advice for new lifters: don't lift to failure for at least 3-4 weeks. Go VERY light during that time and work just on technique, these are new movements for your body that it has to get used to, train the ancillary muscles, etc. You will be VERY sore after the first 1/2 dozen workouts even going light. Do not get discouraged and definitely get into a habit and keep it (e.g., lift on sun, tues, thurs.).
Good luck.
