Public transportation doesn't work in San Diego or Los Angeles, but public transportation works in San Francisco and New York City for example.
At the foot of California St hill, a couple of blocks up from the Trolley turntable, is the Tadich Grill, my all time favorite restaurant. No reservations, be inside the door by 8:30 I believe.
Windsor is near the Russian River Valley right? Dunno' if you can still float down the Russian River. If you liked wine...........anyway follow the Russian River all the way out to the sea and maybe Fort Ross. Other than the mud baths at Calistoga, Napa/Sonoma is all about the wine. Windsor is close enough to commute to San Fran for the day.
I woulda' never considered an organized tour, but I did a bus tour in Spain and it's kinda' nice to be led around and fed at the right times and you get a great view from the tall busses, particularly for a first trip, then you can go back to what you liked.
