in the middle of the night, or in my case, during the weekend, at night and in the midst of winter.
The price you mentioned is for an emergency repair, i.e. repair it right away kind of price. I paid $500 for a 50 gallon A.0. Smith water heater about 10 years ago. This was for an emergency repair, the guy came out in about an hour after I called in late evening. If you live in a populated area, there is always someone in the yellow pages that will come out right away but at a premium. If your plumber neighbor has a recommendation, you may want to give it a try.
Most water heaters, e.g. A.O. Smith, Rheem, etc. are similar, Sears and Home Depot units are fine, some may have a longer warranty or better inner tank, some has claims of better efficiency, you essentially get what you pay for. If you can wait, then go shop around if you don't want to wait, you trade money for time and convenience. Whatever you buy, make sure you buy a heater with a metal drain valve (most good tanks have these days) and not made of cheap plastic.
May also call up your utility company, they usually know contractor that will do short notice water heater replacement.
When you get your new water heater, make sure you periodically drain the crude that sits in the bottom of the tank, hence my recommendation for a metal drain valve that shuts off nicely rather than a plastic one that can fail in time. Some water heater may claim self cleaning and I would trust that statement like Saab recommends changing oil every 10,000 miles 8-). You don't have to drain the whole tank, just drain a gallon or two or until the water turns clear each month or so. This would reduce local heating and hot spots of tank to a minimum and hopefully make your tank last longer.
When you think about it, you may pay $200 to $300 for quick response and convenience but if you spread it out over 5 to 10 years, the premium is really not that much.
