If I need to increase the gap, I wiggle the round gap measuring tool while measuring it for some extra gap. If I need to decrease the gap, I tap the end of the plug with a screw driver handle, somewhat gently to slowly reduce the gap. I either use a feeler gauge set or a round gap measuring tool to measure.
For installing and removing the plugs a wrench like pictured is also very handy, especially on Saabs where the plugs are recessed more than average. Doing it by hand with such a tool prevents overtorqueing which can happen when a ratchet is used.
