Platinum, & probably iridium too, have longer life in the engine compared to copper plugs. There's lots of pressure on car makers to claim really long maintenance intervals, so they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot by saying you need spark plugs every 20k miles.
Pt plugs might pay for themselves if you pay a shop to change them for you. If you change them yourself (& don't count your own labor cost) then Cu plugs are usually cheaper in the long run.
