At last count I have 6 Alfa sedans in North America, and another one overseas. I'll probably replace the 155 overseas with a 156 GTA pretty soon. Guess that makes me an Alfa nut ;-)
To my eyes, the new 3 series resembles the Jaguar X-Type from the rear. Kind of that upward pinched off effect. Also, the BMW has way more character lines that seem to be added just for the sake adornment, and not as a cohesive part of the overall shape. A rather Victorian effect of scallops, ridges, buttresses tacked onto the overall shape. Audi probably takes the cohesive effect to the limit of practical design. The 156 trends towards the Audi school, with minimal creases and flourishes to distract from the overall shape.
As for driving, I would say that virtually all new cars have too many layers between you and the feedback. Carmakers would rather muffle the driving experience, than have to hone every response and leave it undisguised for our critical perusal. That applies to Saab and Alfa, if not to such a great degree as some other brands. BMW is making very accomplished cars, but they are less involving than ever, and you get the feeling when driving one, that they are so accomplished that the car is doing you a privilage by letting you drive it.
My impression is that people buy Alfas for the sporty character of the car. People buy Saabs for the practical character. Both have character, but they are far removed. One is passion, the other is logic. They do not compare.
PS. phred says Hello and that he misses you all.
