If you don't care about compatibility with upgrading to digital, get a used Olympus OM10. very compact, light and reliable. OM4 is a good option also. This is a little more refined that the Pentax k1000, but still inexpensive.
Nikons and Canon are great too. No old manual Canon lenses for use with the manual Canon bodies will work with new Canon digitals. The switch to the EOS system broke compatibility. Old Nikon lenses work on higher end Nikon digitals, but the lower end ones (d100/d70/d50) won't work with non-electronic lenses.
I like black and white process and results. I have a darkroom for black and white and have done this for 15 years. I used a Nikon F4s for this. A beastly camera that was a whole summer's income in high school and now goes for pennies on the dollar on Ebay.
I'm also big into digital and about 99% of my photos are digital. I can't fault it and produce great stuff. I have spent about 10x as much getting setup for digital compared to black and white. It requires a bit of computing genius to work out color management setup.
Use which ever you want. In an artistic sense, they are different but related mediums.
