"No old manual Canon lenses for use with the manual Canon bodies will work with new Canon digitals. The switch to the EOS system broke compatibility. Old Nikon lenses work on higher end Nikon digitals, but the lower end ones (d100/d70/d50) won't work with non-electronic lenses."
There are EF adapters for the older manual Canon lenses, but you're right that automatic exposure (AE) doesn't work and the optical quality is deminished because of the lens element in the adapter. However, oddly enough, the older manual Nikkor lenses works great on the EOS cameras and can even do AE, which is impossible on the Nikon D50/D70/D100. With an adapter you can also use the old M42 mount lenses like Carl Zeiss, Contax, Pentax, Takumar etc on EOS cameras. :)
