If you've never or rarely had back problems, it's probably muscles. If you have had back problems, it could be inflamation and muscles. If it's inflamation, hot will make it worse. Getting down on your knees and stretching forward works for me. A chiropractor or other suitably trained health professional could probably give more accurate advice. I wouldn't do anything strenuous for a day or two.
I hurt my back lifting something, then hiked and played paintball all day long till the pain was too much, then I had to get into my Saab like you describe. I was messed up for about 3 months, had to take a week off from work and lay on the floor, get MRI and heavy duty prescriptions, stretch regularly, etc... If I'd taken it easy afterwards, I would have probably healed well enough over a weekend. Some of my lower discs aren't real great according to the MRI.
