That's what I came up with when I thought about this long ago. Regardless of the area of the contact patch the shape will definitely be different. I do think the wider tire will have a sligly larger contact area but this is based loosely on my experience with mountain biking. It is not a scientifically based statement.
I've done lots of mountain biking in the snow and found that a skinnier tire allows you to ride through the deep snow better but a wider one gives you better grip. When I put on a wider tire, it seems to flatten the same amount as a skinny tire at the same pressure so I do end up with a larger contact patch with a wider tire on a bike. Again.... the wider mountain bike tires I have are softer which takes anything scientific out of what I said. That being said, I know which tires work well on my mountain bike in the snow and why but this is almost an apples to oranges comparison. My favorite mountain bike tires in the snow are the Nokian extreme studded. They're rather soft and have big widely spaced knobs to dig and and shed the snow and the studs last. I studded my own mountain bike tires and it worked pretty well but they don't last and they get very heavy. Nokian got it right.
