Speaking as someone who has consumed the Kool Aid on energy futures, I am baffled that Saab & GM cannot run with efforts in NY, MN, WI and elsewhere to transition to a system less dependent on fossil fuels. The Swedish government has ethanol plants up and running that do not depend on corn or grain crops (and their questionable net energy returns). The US is still big on grains, and MN, land of many Swede-wanna-bes (I should know) leads the country in E85 service stations. How does this relate to Saab? The company is leading the way in E85 engines by using its turbo technology to overcome power issues related to ethanol. The E85 Saabs are actually MORE powerful than comparable gas vehicles! This technology should be positioning the company for growth in the afforementioned states, but instead we get a Saab SUV. So, perhaps returning the company to Swedish ownership would not be such a bad thing.
