that is a LOT of $$ that anders details, an indy would need a tremendous volume to justify spending that, and that's just for one manufacturer.

Is anyone else reminded of Apple computer, who would not share their source codes (or whatever the deal was) so that no one else could write programs?

I vote for a free market to solve these problems not more government regulation, however painful it may be. If volvo is charging $7k a year to indies, eventually someone will just buy a new volvo and dismantle/reverse engineer it to create their own service manuals for sale for say, $4k a year? Pay someone to write the manual on suspension, pay another person to write it on engine, etc., get them all in a room and get it done in a week after the new models are out.

There's lots of ways an innovative car manufacturer could profit from sharing the info. Saab could lead the way by releasing service info to indies at a cost where they make money but don't strangle the indies, "buy a saab and never have to visit a dealer for lousy service again"; authorize certified indies to perform warranty work at market prices, etc.
