When I moved from a small town in Connecticut to Washington, DC in late 2004, I did consider getting rid of my car, mostly because of the increase in Insurance. The Highway Safety Inst. rated the Wash, DC area the most dangerous metro area in the country to drive in and I was thinking that I may prefer to take the Metro and use car sharing like Zipcar when needed, once I moved here. After all, I was moving to a big city partially so I would not have to be a slave to my car all the time. However, my car, a 94 C900 Turbo Convertible (aka Inga) is really a an extension of my personality. I have put an inordinate amount of money (new 5 spd & turbo, stainless exhaust, installing an SPG kit, SuperAero rims) into her, that I would not get back anytime soon, unless I could find a Saab nut who is just as in love with the car as I am. I sought out a place to live that was both close to the Metro and had indoor parking, which costs me about $100/month extra. Also, I am lucky to have indoor parking at a nominal cost at work when I want it. I drive to work maybe two days a week (usually days when I have class that evening across town at Georgetown, so it makes sense to have my car when I get out of class at 10pm or so) and take the Metro on other days. I go to work fairly early, around 7am, so I miss the worst parts of DC rush hour usually, becasue I always get worried about the wear and tear of stop and go traffic on my c900--not to mention turbos don't seem to care for slow traffic on hot days.
I can summarize why my car means so much to me: Its how after a bad day at work, if the sun is out (even if the temp. is only in the 50's) I can put the top down, turn the floor heat to max, turn the seat heaters on, put some led zepplin in the cd player and it brings a smile to my face every single time. I love how people look at me like I'm the crazy one to have the top down on a 55 deg. day. What you need to re-asess Devin is how your car fits into your life on a viceral level. You can go get groceries in any car, but if your Saab truly brings you joy, then you should go to the extra trouble and expense to keep it nearby when you move to Queens.
