both agreeing that marriage is not a competition. It's also deciding that arguing takes too much energy, increases stress, and that you need to be flexible with each other. Respect each other's interests, privacy and right to do things that make them happy. Tolerance for each other's failings and foibles is a big thing.
Been married for 23.5 and we hardly ever argue. We disagree on stuff, and while we get annoyed with each other from time to time, it's over in an hour or so. No yelling. It's more important to just stay happy and get along... life's to short to be constantly semi-pissed at your spouse. And our kids realize that it's important since they have friends whose parents are divorced and know what it does to the kids.
Maybe not having gotten married until we were 32 and 28 helped. As did kissing a few too many frogs beforehand.
JMHO.
