Chances are, if you are at the point where you need counseling, there has been some damage done to the relationship. You may want to find out if the damage can be repaired. In many cases it can't. What were the attributes that brought you two together in the first place? Do they still exist? These are the questions you should ask each other before going to a counseler....who is actually a moderator. IMO, Counseling should be done prior to the promise and contract of saying "I do" for life or time and all eternity. Regretably, over 50% of marriges fail in this country. It seems that it is easier to call it quits when things get a little dicey. The statistics are getting worse, not better.
