You state "Modern cars must run hotter to meet emissions and mileage specs. That is to much for modern regular oils. They cook and sludge." Your implication is that this happens in all cars to all "regular" oils. This is simply untrue. There are some engines that are particularly hard on oil, and for those engines you are correct it's best to use an "expensive" (if $5/qt really qualifies as expensive) to avoid problems. Our 9-5, the late 90's early 2000's Toyotas, some of VW's engines, and the Chrysler 2.7 V6 all fall into that category.
However, most engines are not that tough on oil, and regular conventional oil run at the recommended intervals is quite up to the task. This is an indisputable fact. If it weren't, sludging problems would not be limited to certain engines - it would happen to all cars. It doesn't.
