I spent a few days there on the way to Africa of all places. Icelandair had the least expensive flight I needed to Paris and offered a free stopover. I went in late September and the temps were already around freezing with plenty of snow, which made the landscape look quite lunar to me.
As other have said, Iceland is very expansive. A cheap meal was about US$15 and a pint of beer about US$10. I believe Icelandair offers packages with hotels, so be sure to check that out. Splurge and eatsome seafood, the lobster was great. There are also a variety of "odd" local dishes to enjoy.
Renting a car was a good value, so I might recommend that. It made it easy to get to attractions like Gulfoss, the geysers and the blue lagoon, as well as the airport which is quite far away. If you want to check out some really rugged terrain, go snow mobileing, climb galciers, etc. you might want to look into a tour.
Iceland stuck me as the kind of place you can get a feel for and really enjoy over just a few days, or spend a long time there if you really want to do some hardcore outdoorsmanship.
