Nick,
I was a consultant for 5 years at a couple of boutique consulting firms. Both firms had "easy travel" schedules. We were one the road at client sites 4 days and 3 nights if possible. At the big name firms, it was usually 5 days at client and 4-5 nights away. I travled 50 weeks a year for 5 years. Also, it is very unlikely you'll get a "home client" (no travel) with no seniority. If you did, it'll only be for a short time as you'll rotate within a few months.
Consulting is great work with good pay if you're ok with the travel schedule. But its also difficult to land a job with any consulting firm: Deloitte, Accenture, PWC, etc. Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain, and McKinsey are the top strategy firms and are extremely hard to get into. They usually recruit only the top candidates from the top 5 MBA programs, but sometimes they hire a few from the next 20 schools.
I completed my Full-Time MBA from the Carlson School (U of MN) last spring which is ranked in the top 25. None of the strategy firms recruited there but 1 of my classmates landed at McKinsey through their open recruing program.
I am currently trying my luck at starting up a Venure Consulting business. We help emerging companies with bus dev, corp dev, strategy, fundraising, etc. I have no travel, but almost no pay too. Our fees are usually high risk because we get much of it as % of funds raised and often only get equity.
Look elsewhere if you don't want to travel extensively. Most consulting firms require up to 100% travel.
Sorry for the length, but just my thoughts from my experiences.
