Twenty years ago (or so) pratically all cars (excluding exotics) had 15" rims. Then we started getting 16" with the same overall tire diameter. These tires had lower profile tires to accomplish this. Less sidewall flex, better handling. Combine this with lighter materials for the rim, and overall unsprung weight is lower. 17" rims take this a step further. My Aero came with 225/45-R17, with a relatively light rim.
What I meant to say, regaring the Magnum, is that with 18" rims, I expected to see a 40, maybe 45 max tire ratio. Instead, it had a 60 series on an 18" rim. That is a BIG tire. WHY? It's probably also a very heavy rim.
No reduction in sidewall flex, no reduction in unsprung weight.
I looked at TireRack, and actually they had truck tires available as replacements for the Magnum. It was a 99 weight class, vs. 94 for the Aero SW. Maybe about 230 lbs more weight carrying capacity. As I said in first post, the Hemi Magnum is 500 lbs more than my SW. The Aero SW has a carrying capacity of 920 lbs. I'll have to find out from coworker if it actually has another 500 lb carrying capacity. I doubt it.
So, is the Magnum BIG tires just for a manly, SUV-like appearance?
