I'm not a fan of the state issued plate on the front of the car so I got a Euro-style 'Saab' vanity plate instead. I got a state issued vanity plate that also says 'Saab' so the front and rear plate at least say the same thing. I figured if I were pulled over I'd just point out that they are the same. I'm not worried too much; if I get a ticket I can put the state issued plate on the front and switch back after a while.
I think there are places online that will custom make a Euro-styled plate that matches your state issued plate so the characters match (i.e. 1M 12345). While not entirely legal, you may be able to talk yourself out of a ticket if you are questioned. I think it just depends on your risk tolerance.
