and is one of the reasons why I went self-employed 15 years ago.
I had a boss whose management style was to brow-beat, second-guess and denigrate his staff. I ran the daily operations of an ongoing $3 million dollar project and realized he would quickly demoralize my team (4 professionals, 35 hourly folks). Fortunately we were on opposite coasts, so having a thick hide, I took his crap, insulated my team and kept the project running well. Then I left for a better opp.
A month after I left my #1 report called me and thanked me for how much I protected them from the guy. And he was fired 6 months later.
I had other bosses who resisted any new ideas that weren't their own, questioned everything, and didn't give credit for work well done. Now, as an outsider, I go into client companies and see the same stuff going on. This, unfortunately, is the way the world works--There are just some people who should not manage other people. Sometimes you can work it so the boss comes to rely on your support, but often there's not much you can do but hope the guy moves on or you find a better opportunity. But it does suck to have to put up with it on a daily basis.
Good luck.
