I will be replacing the wash on my fireplace chimney this weekend and I am uncertain what is the appropriate material.
My existing chimney wash is mortar and heavily cracked, allowing rain water to soak the first few layers of bricks at the chimney top. I watched my dad build two chimneys when I was a kid (actually I was the squirrel climbing up the scaffold with buckets of bricks or mortar as they were needed) and I am fairly certain he used concrete for the wash. My AIA Graphic Standards (ed #7) does not specify whether the wash is mortar or concrete.
My current plan is to use concrete for the wash, reinforced with chicken wire (being careful to cut it 3/4-inch smaller than needed on all sides), constructing a small form on the chimney top so the outer edge of the wash is at least 1/2-inch thick, and tapering the wash to 4-1/2 inches thick at the flue.
Is this a correct method?
Thanks.
