the old ones had white or black epoxy-based (i think) paint on them, the new ones are painted silver with clear letters (on the backlit ones anyway).
another good question is this - is the shape of the letter determined by the paint? or is each key unique due to its show-thru?
if solely by the paint, it makes good financial and manufacturing sense to backlight the keys. if each molding is unique, it raises other issues. normally keys are not unique until the letters are applied. (there are a handful of different shapes/sizes)
although, these days, i wouldn't be surprised to see one machine that molds all the keys at the same time, then puts them in all the switches. too much labor and parts tracking otherwise, in my mind anyway.
