FWIW, I gotta echo everything oldsaab has said so far... He's spot on about everything, and brought up a number of points that often go overlooked.
My job isn't storage (it was years ago...), but it's a big component of what I do and what I've done for several years. I've built everything from RAID 0 arrays to RAID 50, and for the home user, RAID 1 is the only good option.
RAID is expensive in raw terms, but considering that 250gb SATA drives are substantially under $100 these days, you can't even touch any other sort of backup for the price. Neither tape nor optical storage are real options for backing up that size of data at any sort of cost effective level - even buying that 160/320 autoloader used from ebay... RAID 1 built into Windows 2000 and XP Pro works well, and is free with your OS... you can't beat that!
All that said, hop onto ebay and look for a Dell CERC SATA controller. They are dirt cheap (under $100), have 6 SATA ports, support most every RAID level, and include a 16m cache. It's about the lowest cost option there is for SATA RAID...
