No, you can loose one drive, and if your rebuild happens completely then you can loose a second drive. On the other hand, if you loose one drive, and during the rebuild (which by the way is impacted by your accessing the drives in the surviving set) loose any other drive, you are toast. For the entire array. Period. I hope your IT guys understands this or your salesperson told you guys that! Also, the amount of time for the rebuild is increased by the total number of drives and the total storage AND competition for access (read users). If you are Unix heads think of a FSCK, back when they were needed. Bigger drives needed more time.
Windows heads, think scandisk before NTFS.

I like your statement about good dicipline being needed to do the backups. I'd cover a wager right now that over 50% of the people reading this have 1) not done a complete backup of their home system that can be restored without reloading the OS (and a crap load of updates OS and apps)(and I don't care what OS, just a home system, business or not) and 2) have not done a backup of their critical data (email, quicken, docs, xls, major app, mp3s, jpgs etc). 3) on all of their systems.

Gartner and others know this. Files local to the pc often do not get backed up at work either. If it's not on the server you are out of luck.

As to too noisey and costly for home, maybe, maybe not. Technology trickles down baby...

Do you have the *ability* to send or receive a FAX at home?
Do you have cable modem or DSL at home?
Do you have more than one computer at home?
Do you have network at home?
Do you have any wireless devices at home?
Do you have a shared device (printer, storage) on your network at home?
Do you have a copier at home?
Do you have a color printer at home?

Did you have them 10 years ago?

Technology trickles down baby...
