They cost more but they do work well and can be run all year round, assuming you are talking about WRs. I have those on my daughter's 9000 and they are fine winter and summer. She had no issues last winter and they seem to wear well.
That said, I needed snows for my wife's 9-5 this year and did not spring for Nokians as the budget had to include steel wheels, too. So I went with some recommendations here and on Tire Rack for Dunlop WinterSport M3. They go on next weekend. I've had Dunlops on 3 cars and been happy, but I think overall a Nokian is a better tire if you care to spend the extra bucks.
As for Blizzaks, I've had them on 3 cars but only really liked them on my '86 GTI. They were mediocre on my C900 and wore like rice paper on my 940T Volvo wagon. They are great while the soft multi-cell compound is still there, but once it is gone they are strictly average or less. IMHO, this is mostly a biz model to sell more tires sooner. I would never buy them again.
The ice issue is interesting. Nokian claims lateral grip--as in cornering--is more important than braking grip in most winter conditions. This has some truth to it, especially if you drive with appropriate following distances. But lateral grip gets you around corners and aids evasive maneuvers. Or so the logic goes.
