Well, Saab is hardly unique in its continuing dedication to turbos... with the exception of Honda, most of the Japanese brands moved to turbos by 1980 or 1981 and have used them continuously through today. Of course, we didn't see many of those cars here, but they did exist.
And don't be so quick to dump on an "all too American answer." A fully loaded LS6 makes 400hp and weighs about 450lbs. That isn't much more than any of Saab's 4 cylinders once you add in the weight of the turbo and the intercooler - I'd wager it's less than the new 2.8 V6. Considering the substantial power advantage of an LS6, I don't think that's much of a drawback. And 21/29 vs. 16/26 (9-5 2.3t vs. a freaking Corvette) isn't exactly a huge economy difference, either.
Fortunately for car enthusiasts, there is no right answer when it comes to making power or improving fuel economy. There probably aren't even "better" answers. For every reason to choose a turbo, there's an equally good reason to choose displacement, high revs, or electricity. That's what keeps my driveway fun.
