I would second Montoya's comment even though I've never driven a NASCAR racer. When I see one at a car show or someplace I always reach in an yank the steering wheel. There is usually about 2-3 inches of play. Now maybe you need this in oval track racing, but it has to make driving the things a bit weird.
A guy I know has three classic MGs, one of which is an L2, a pre-World War 2 car with a supercharger and 140 hp. In a 1400 pound car. It is a freaking rocket, with a 10:1 power to weight ratio. And it has about 3" of play in the steering. He says they were all like that 70 years ago and there is a real technique to driving cars with that huge dead spot in the steering.
Which sort of tells you what primitive steering NASCAR machines have.
