You should minimize the amount of time that the clutch pedal is pushed down. The longer you hold this down for, the more wear you are putting on the throwout bearing. Its not designed to be used like you're driving it. Never sit at a light with the clutch pedal held down. bad bad bad. If you want to prolong the life of the transmission, you can start by matching the speed of the engine perfectly on your shifts. You can let the clutch out a little slowly to give yourself room for learning, but that is really the first thing you should try to do. Shift so that it is imperceptable to your passengers that you're shifting. Part of this is letting off the gas right after you push the clutch pedal in.
