I had an unfortunate weekend with my fuel pump on my 98 9000CSE going out on me 300 miles from home in a small town in Northern Michigan. The bozos at the local repair shop finally managed to replace the pump but in the process broke a plastic nipple that was part of the fuel return line. The replacement was $90. I figured they broke it they pay for it. The owner, however, said it was part of the cost of repairing the pump and it was natural for aging plastic to become brittle and he charged me for it. I argued long and hard but he wouldn't budge. He knocked some other bits off the bill elsewhere but wouldn't move on this fuel line part.

My question is has anybody had a similar experience? Do you think it's right for a shop to charge for stuff they damage in the course of doing repairs?
