Skip,
The standard technique for "Antiqueing" copper and silver is a dilute solution of Ammonium Sulfide, AKA "Liver of Sulfur". The sulfides of both metals are brown/black.
Best applied in a few very dilute applications,as a strong solution will result in a very dark brown/black patina, but will likely flake off easily.
Generally applied to carved/chased/tooled or sculpted copper/brass/silver to darken the background, and then buffed off the raised surface to highlight the detail.
It's stinky stuff, but not really hazardous. Don't do this work in the house! Strickly an outdoor project...
Should be available from jewelry suppliers, or, your local friendly high school/college chemistry department.
