a '59, a '68 and a '70.

The '68 had a mildly tweaked 1600 cc motor and I used to autocross it back in '72-'73. I made a front air dam out of sheet metal and had a wide scoop below the rear window that reduced the huge drag that body shape creates. It would run about 110 mph. Lot of fun. Also drove it across the country twice.

The '70 had a weaker motor but better suspension and was a great autocross car in the mid-'70s. Always placed in the top 3 of small stock sedan class. Even took a Fast Time of Day once. I was in college with no money, and it kinda looked like a beater so no one ever suspected it. Did some long trips in it, too.

They sure had their quirks and rust was an issue, but the real Bugs were great cars. Fun to drive, easy to fix and surprisingly good handling for their time.
