Hey Chris,
The work is not difficult at all, just a bit back breaking. Here are the basic steps that I have followed with very, very good results for pavers in the Northeast (clay bricks would be slightly different):
Excavate down one foot, more if there is still loam. Then add your base material (I use a 3/4 stone and stone dust mix sometimes called Graded Base or Perk-Pak (sp?)). This should be added in 4"-6" lifts then compacted either with a manual tamper or a rented/borrowed plate compactor (definitely the way to go). Now the base is essentially finished. Spread one inch of sand on top of the base, layout the pavers, then "box" it in with edging. Run the plate compactor over the pavers (this will seat them). Sweep sand into the cracks, tamp with the compactor. Sweep and tamp again, finish with a final sweep.
If you are interested in more detailed instructions/questions send me an email. Usually, contractors will charge between $16 and $19 per square foot ($2400 - $2850 for $150 square feet); just a rule of thumb though. Good pavers (Belgard, Unilock, TechoBloc) will make a difference in the appearance, but for staying power, you NEED to have a solid base.
Take Care,
Nate
