We vacationed there in April last year, and it was awesome. Lots of choices depending on exactly what you are looking for. Gatlinburg is your traditional tourist town with lots of candy shops and other tourist stuff, can get congested. Pigeon Forge is newer, with open spaces, modern chain hotels, and some nice indepentents too. Dollywood and lots of "entertainment" type places in Pigeon Forge.
We stayed about 1/2 hour from either place in Townsend, TN, which is called the peaceful side of the Somkies, and right by the entrance to the park. We did the park route by car probably 4 times, saw lots of wildlife, enjoyed the old homesteads, etc. We stayed in a log cabin, shoot me an email and I can send you some links.
As for driving roads, depending on where you're coming from, you will likely enjoy them all. You will be close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is heavenly outside of peak tourist season.
All in all, GSM is a great place for a vacation.
