We summer in Highlands, N.C. and most certainly recommend the Highlands - Cashiers area. The Hampton Inn is in Cashiers and one of America's great resort/Inns. Cherokee, N.C. is certainly touristy, but the show "Trail of a Thousand Tears" (depicting the Cherokee Indians' history) is OK entertainment.
The Great Smokey Mountain N.P. is the single most visited N.P. in the U.S. as it is within a day's drive of over half the U.S. population. And absolutely worth the trip. If you want to "do" the Smokies, find lodging that fits your style/taste and budget and explore to your heart's content. If you are more the "let's see where this road leads us" type, there are plenty of towns with B&B's or small motels that make for fine overnight rest stops. A two day drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee, N.C. to Asheville would provide you a chance to stop at the Pisgah Inn (on the Blue Ridge Parkway) in the heart of the Pisgah National Forest and to overnight at the Biltmore Estate's Inn. Biltmore is without a doubt a must see if you're into historic architecture and what "robber barons" could do with their money. Truely America's finest castle. Not for young kids, though.
Western North Carolina is a wonderful vacation land with plenty of great drives, picturesque villages and towns, waterfalls, picnic areas, hiking trails, the list could go on and on. You'll have a great time whatever you decide to do.
