OT: Arbitration clause in home improvement contract?

Hello all, happy Monday!
I'm looking to contract someone to do about $2000 of work on the roof of my house. The contract he sent states that I waive my right to sue and instead use arbitration if there's any dispute.
Although the job is relatively small, there's the possibility that damage could occur that exceeds the value of the job if he does something really boneheaded like leave things open during a rainstorm. So I'm a little concerned about waiving my right to sue.
Are these sorts of clauses standard these days (I'm in Northeast USA)? Anyone ever had any luck negotiating something like this?
Thanks!
Eric
