If every door had the exact same point of contact, and it matched with the rub strip, I'd see your point. My 9000 Aero (which has HUGE) body moulding/rub strips) has door dings due to the fact that not every door out there matches my rub strips. Painted rub strips will show scuffs anyway. (Mine are the old-school black.) (I just park away from everyone else. With the exception of one ding, every minor mark on my car was there when I bought it, nearly four years ago.)
I think that the cars look better with no black on them, and I firmly believe that the rub strips prevent a minimal amount of door dings, etc.
I could go either way, but I like the color-matched look, be it with or without rub strips.
Now, if you're talking about opening your own door into a wall or something, that's no one's fault but your own.
With all that said, I like the new 9-3. Anyone know if those tail lights are, in fact, the US-spec? The red reflector lends credibility, but I don't think that red bulb/clear plastic will fly in some states.
Cheers,
Peter
