I discussed this at length with my detistry buddies some time ago.
On a microscopic scale, amalgam bonds/presses/pushes up closer to the tooth, keeping sugars and bacteria away better.
As far as bad effects from Mercury in amalgam, there is a lot of anacdotal stuff out there about multiple sclerosis patients improving when amalgam is removed and replaced with ceramic. Nothing solid though. At some point I am hoping someone will compile a true study of real merit.
Mercury has mutagenic effects AND central nervous system effects BUT there is a big BUT. Usually it is not the liquid Mercury that is dangerous. Actually the Human body sees liquid Mercury as almost inert. It is the chemical compounds containing Mercury that are dangerous. (I am not sure about the effects of vaporized Mercury, as in Gold mining and purification processes where Mercury dissolves the Gold from the ore and then is vaporized off with high heat.)
Best,
C
