Perhaps the c900 heater core appears to be so tough is because the system has a relief valve. And the relief valve is the heater control valve which anyone who has ever owned a c900 knows it is notorously unreliable and will leak. The HCV will never allow the c900 heater core to be subject to higher pressure so it sacrifices itself to protect the heater core.
Later the design eliminated the HCV so there is no more valves on the coolant circuit thus no relief valve, making the heater core to subject to higher pressure so it appears the 9000 had more of its share of heater core failures.
Perhaps the heater core design never changed? Just my two cents.
