the south side, along Nantucket Sound, is crowded and touristy, while the north side, along Cape Cod Bay is quieter and more scenic. Then there's the Lower Cape, which runs from Chatham to Provincetown. Cape afficionados usually say that is the best part. The National Seashore is in this part of the Cape.
But you are going "off-season" which is the best time down there. You don't get the summer traffic, the weather stands to be decent and the ocean temps are still decent on the Sound side. Bigger, more accessible beaches on the Sound.
Take a day and get the ferry from Falmouth to Martha's Vineyard. Rent bikes or mopeds and cruise around. Taking a car over is expensive, but if you do that, the ferry is out of Woods Hole.
Go to Provincetown and do the monument as another poster suggests. Lots of funky shops and places to see there.
Hit the National seashore and the big (and probably fairly empty beaches).
Chatham is nice.
Distances there are short--it's only about 60 miles from the Canal to P-town on Rte 6-- so it's easy to go a couple of places in a day.
Have fun.
