Yaofeng didn't mention Goodyear. Besides they might be going on 2 years old by now.

The lead paint wasn't a design spec issue. The magnets were always clearly a design flaw; it just sort of all blended together because of the paint issue at the same time perhaps and perhaps.

The apology thing to a foreign government was sort of surreal (particularly the part about "an overly broad recall"). What does that mean? Was this recall really an affront to the Chinese nation such that it required an apology? If anything I think it oddly did more harm than good to the image of China. Unlike most cases when under the media/public spot light I think the Chinese government, this time for a change, actually did a number of things right and showed a real recognition for some of the the problems at hand and a resolve to address them. The apology and reaction to it as well as some of the other comments and handling undercut this and I think did more harm than good from a PR point of view.

Sure the lead paint should have been caught ealier although compared to some of the other companies with similar lead and other issues recently this did get caught fairly early (although that was still too late of course and quality control clearly needed to be tighter) but it clearly is illustrative of the issues with manufacturing in China at least a small but significant percentage of the time. These were established partners of many years and illegal subsitutions still occurred.

The most recent Chinese tire horror story, which is more relevant here, was the result of a supplier deciding to deviate from the specs and make an unauthorized and illegal ommission/subsitution. Sure the importer needs to ensure the quality and regardless of source the world over some will try to cut corners for profit but the issue is bigger than that in China. Doesn't matter if it is toys, crayons, food goods, tires, or ... there clearly have been extraordinary failures not simply in quality control but legal compliance.

Not that one should be surprised. An explosive capitalistic wild west has been unleashed in what remains an authoritarian and suppressive country that lacks sufficient and effective regulation and that appears to remain ripe with local corruption in many areas. All the more reason for manufactures and importers to be very careful and consumers need to be wise and consider the implications of their behavior too. However, China also has to suck it up, acknowledge there are significant problems, and deal with it head on instead of gloating over bizarre apologies, assuring people the majority of manufactured goods are OK (what is a dead dog or two; a little lead paint; crayons with so much lead they nearly killed, your so picky picky picky), and get beyond their historical general politics of suppression and deflection of anything that casts anything less than a positive light.
