This is to follow up on the credit card fraud which happened to me in October. A thief somehow got our Visa account info with Capital One and made off with close to $3,000 merchandise at Lowes in Gaithersburg and Home Depot in Germantown, MD. There were three purchases, two in Lowes and one in HD all on the same day. It was Oct. 18. I was out of the country. My wife was at home in New Jersey.

Capital one gave us temporary credit while investigating this. Of course we needed to dispute the charges first, followed by Capital One closing the old account to open a new one for us.

On Dec. 3 Capital One wrote us a letter stating they have obtained receipt from the merchant for one of the transactions. In the letter it said a copy of the receipt was enclosed. But we saw none. It further stated it is reverting the charge back to our account and consider the case closed.

When I heard it relayed to me by my wife (I am out of the country again) I was naturally furious. We do not yet know who the thief is and what he made off Capital One has the gall to close the case? I called Capital One right away. They promised to send the receipt again. They also said it is standard procedure to state in the letter to close the case expecting the card holder to continue the dispute. I followed up the phone conversation with a letter demanding the receipt to be sent to us.

The Capital One agent also read me a name on the receipt. It is neither mine nor my wife's name. So in that regard we are getting somewhere. $3,000 of merchandize from Lowes and HD cannot be jewelry. The thief has to have an address in the neighborhood.

I will update with further development when I have it. I expect this to last at least a couple of more months.
