I think the Finish Saabs (at least the later ones) are YK which temporarily threw me off on what the second letter represented. Still not really clear why K. Could be b/c it was actually build in partnership not full fledged Saab plant so separate company code. Could be something else or in combination with something else. Regardless it happens to indicate a Saab built in Finland.
[The 9-7 and 9-2 seem to use typical American and Japanese VINs I think. Haven't really looked at either of these.] All Volvos I have seen seem to be YV1 regardless of country of production so indeed indicative of Volvo. The Swedish Saabs (aside from rather old with older style VINS) always seem to be YS3 as I guess is true for some of the non-Swedish Saabs now it sounds. That 3rd number in these last two cases seems to indicates car lines (as compared to bus and truck lines) I think.
All I know for sure my Saabs (from '85-06) have all started YS3.
