I think we'll see some shifting in commute patterns--resurgent inner cities, people living closer to their work-- but I also think our entire economic structure (think Home Depot, Costco, etc.) is built around private transportation, so the private auto will remain the foundation of our American life style. Still, I expect the government to invest more heavily and readily into mass transportation. The autos we do have will be smaller, more economical to operate, and more likely to run on alternative energies, but they will still be private cars nonetheless. We will be more economical in our driving, but we will also cut back in other areas to compensate (fewer restaurant meals, for example, saves both food and transportation costs). Long distance distribution of goods will rely on a resurgent rail network, and trucks, many of which will be retrofitted for natural gas, will be used more for short-haul distribution.
