It all depends what he broke and what job he was doing.
Replacing an alternator recently on a 2001 9-5 I broke off two downpipe studs when removing the bolts for the downpipe. Now, is it my fault they were old and ready to break? Could it have been avoided? Was I taking them off incorrectly? The answer to all of the above is no. I ended up getting another turbine housing from a friend and charged him my cost for the housing plus 2hrs labor to pull the turbo and swap them.
Doing a fuel pump on most Saabs it's common to break the feed and return nipples that enter into the top of the assembly. That used to happen to me often, and I would have to charge over my estimate for the new ones plus labor time to install them. Lesson learned, now I just always replace them when doing a fuel pump and include them in the quote.
Anyway, be nice to your Indy. Stuff happens, and a lot of bolts are seized and things can break. Ask any DIY'er and they will inform you to the problems. It all depends on what got broken. Also, if you're giving him that much work, you will want him to be happy with the work he is doing and the money he is making because it can really help motivate us to go the extra mile for someone knowing they are a good client.
He should at least source the part though, no matter who is paying.
Take care,
-Chad
