It's hard to say without specifics.
Also it depends on if he told you about it up front or if you found out later.
It is many, many times I wish I had the customer standing right there and maybe even give him the tools to try to loosen things themself so that they get a picture of the stupidity of car design and how the designer had no clue that things might have to come apart again 10-15 years later when the plastic has gotten brittle or things are welded together by rust.
I can mention many different parts on different years/models that are just about impossible to remove 10 years later without breaking something.
And the same part on another year/model comes off without any problems at all so that's why I know it can be designed and built in a better way.
Sometimes an earlier model has this foolproof design whereas the new and improved model is riddled with design flaws and where you can tell that they choose the cheaper solution over good.
My feeling is if that he has been treating you good before and this is the first time something has happened, you need to put the broken pieces in their right perspective and if they are related to the work performed and he can explain that they might or will break when doing the job, you need to give him some slack.
If it is that a completely unrelated part broke due to mishandling or negligence and he still try to charge you for it, then it might be reason for being upset.
Hope this helps
