IMHO:
Caarma is correct by stating that US Companies are tied to Quarterly Profits due to their investors wanting that dividend or knowing that their stock price is high. This leads many US Companies to be VERY short-sighted. Long term planning is often glossed over for short-term profits. One reason that Japanese auto makers were able to make the inroads into the US market is that they had a much longer term outlook. In the early 80s, for example, the early Honda Accords were much nicer cars than anything that US maker were producing. Higher quality, more features, etc. for the money. However, Honda took much smaller profit margins than the US makers in order to keep their prices competitive. They did this to gain market share. Toyota and Nissan followed suit. They understood that market share was the key to being profitable in the LONG term. US makers rolled out the Pinto and the Vega and the Monza and ?, but weren't willing to accept lower margins to either greatly undercut the Japanese or to produce higher quality at the same price point.
As for the public wanting the big SUVs and Pickups, I believe the following: This is very much a chicken and the egg argument. If the auto companies didn't advertise the H*** out of those vehicles in order to create the demand, I don't believe that the "demand" would have been there to the extent that it was. Why did they push those vehicles so hard? Profit!!!
