laughing as I am typing this... Microsoft often does know what you want more than you do... *THEY* know there applications, and as you will see later why they get this way... LOL. remember that the number of computer users and the applications they are running has grown exponentially over the past 20 years, However, this doesn't mean that the number of qualified people has.

It may not be PC (is anything anymore?) but I've noticed that the percentages of users that are talented/trained/care/know their left hand from their right hand.... hasn't changed much. Not a slam, just it is what it is. What it means is technical support volume for those end users that venture outside the box has grown as the complexity and the number of users trying to do things without training has balloned. It is what it is. There are companies that make a career of being better at tech support, are the outsourcers for companies who want to concentrate on their core competency, and these companies (the good ones!) not only do the support but determine how the user documentation could be improved to lessen the need to make that call. Profit for the support company by keeping the calls to a minimum.

As you may have noticed, there are most likely 5 different ways you can accomplish anything in windows & windows applications, and maybe 5 more. So you click edit/select all, and I hold the shift key and page down or arrow down or end we both have done same thing. but differently. What? You did the same thing I did, differently? What are you saying? If you haven't worked with end users and tried to get into their frame of mind/operation to help them, and instead tried to drag them over to *your* frame/way of doing something... Try it sometime. It's worse than talking my 82 year old father into a fix over the phone, and I know the man!

So, MS and I bet many others (but it's not my deal so I'm not taking count) have streamlined the process. You may have seen it. Open the box, put the CD in, the installer comes up and says to type in your name, maybe the company too, then type the serial number from the box (you *did* keep the box, right?), and then STEP AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD, you will be notified when your fingers are needed.... eventurally you get a click here to finish, and then a click here to reboot (although *sometimes* you don't get this last and it just *does the reboot* which really pisses me off! Not I didn't close all the windows I was actually in another window doing something! Hope I don't get struck by lightening or something.) so you click and click.... and the system reboots and now you have a new application that I'll cover a BET that you haven't been trained to use, so you wade thru the online help, call a buddy that uses it, maybe your company has a training session schedule later, call tech support for the vendor of the product.... come on, we've *ALL* done it...

So yes, the software guys are dumbing down the applications interface so that you can "use it right from the box", but really to try and stop you junkies (that's hospital IT talk for users...) from calling with dumb questions! LOL
