Just a couple of points!
1) "NOW having their OS based in Linux...", Apple OS X is based on Unix not Linux.
2) Apple resisted using Intel processors for several reasons. The main reason is that the IBM/Motorola Power PC chip was a RISC chip that produced better performance for what Apple wanted at the time. The move to Intel was prompted by dwindling demand for for the Power PC chip from places other than Apple. This led to reduced investment in the chip by IBM/Motorola. Apple decided that the chip was not going to be developed further fast enough and made the switch to Intel, which had just introduced the Core Duo. Since the Mac OS already supported multiple processors, this was a good move for Apple and had the side benefit of allowing Windows to be run on Macs, if the user found it necessary.
3) Apple did NOT "see fit" to run MS Office on Macs. Apple and Microsoft reached an agreement around the time of the introduction of the first iMac that would ensure that Microsoft would CONTINUE make Mac compatible products. The move was made by MS as they saw that the Mac was a viable product and they certainly wanted a piece of that pie as well.
4) I agree that some of my Mac compatriots are quite overzealous in their evangelizing. I use both Windows and Macs (although prefer Macs). I tend to evangelize on occasion as well. And yes it only a tool. But why would I want to use a tool that crashes and burns when I can use a tool that is far more stable and at least for me, far easier to use. I think that some of the zeal on the part of Mac fanatics is due to the absolute disdain exhibited by many in the PC world, who still spout arguments against Macs based on comparing the two platforms in 1993.
5) Caarma's original issue with MS Word in this thread is another reason that I have a problem with MS products. Although her problem was a Style sheet issue and not an Autoformat issue, why is MS Word set up by default to Autoformat at all. I hate sitting down to produce a document and have the software try to decide for me what it thinks I am trying to do.
We are Microsoft. You will be assimilated. Resistance is (not) futile!!
